IPU’s declaration on free and fair elections

They say that the night is darkest just before dawn. The Iranian regime is growing more and more desperate in their attempts to stay in power and are using oppression as their only tool to silence the uprisings. They don’t understand that the Iranian people, inside the country and in the rest of the world, have made their decision and are not going to give up! Increased oppression only leads to increased motivation for an opposition that has taken the world by storm. We know that the sun will soon rise.

The IPU is the international organization of Parliaments and was established in 1889.
The Union is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and co-operation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy.
The IPU supports the efforts of the United Nations, whose objectives it shares, and works in close co-operation with it. The Union also co-operates with regional inter-parliamentary organizations, as well as with international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations which are motivated by the same ideals.

155 countries around the world are members of the Union and Islamic Republic of Iran is one of these countries.

The government of Iran is just like the other members of IPU obligated to the organization’s declarations, and that means Iran’s government is officially bound to “Declaration on criteria for free and fair elections”. Regarding to that declaration, the member countries should make sure that the election conditions are totally in conformity with all the paragraphs mentioned in the declaration.

As the world has been witnessing, the 2009 Iranian presidential election have been heavily criticized for not having the necessary transparency and fairness. The following is the IPU’s officially declaration for fair and free elections, which is issued to all its members, including Islamic Republic of Iran.
